DrCheckRaise Talks With WSOP Champ Jerry Yang (13 replies)

Interview With Jerry Yang

I spoke with Jerry Yang for an article I was doing for Australian Poker Weekly. The focus of that article was to be on his charitable reign while being the 2007 WSOP Champion. It is a good story and after it hits the news stands in Australia I will be proud to share that with you. But I also was able to speak to Jerry about other subjects for the members here are DrCheckRaise.com. I was particularly interested in his rise from beginner to World Champ in 2 short years and asked him to share that with me.

He said that he was not a wealthy man by any stretch of the imagination, and that he and his wife were sitting on the couch flipping through the channels when he ran across Joe Hachem winning the 2005 WSOP. He said that he looked at his wife and said, “I can do that”. Well from what he told me she was less than impressed with that statement and gave him a look that communicated that she wanted no part of him squandering what little money they had on poker. Without her saying a word he promised her that he would not spend any more than 5% of his weekly income to play poker.

He did just that. He said that he played at the local casinos and he was winning. That a lot of his wins were very ugly, getting in behind and sucking out. Making people angry at times cursing him and calling him names. He tells me that was where his nickname, “The Shadow” came from. That he was told he was like a shadow, you just can’t shake him or get rid of him. If I understood the soft spoken Yang correctly he was actually called by one man a “F*@$!^# Shadow” He was no stranger of sucking out.

At his local casino, an Indian casino he entered a satellite to the main event for the WSOP for a $225 entry fee. He won that event and the Grand Prize, either $10,000 cash or they would purchase the seat for him. Because he and his wife could have used the 10k, he says he didn’t actually tell his wife that he had the option. He took the seat, fearing that his wife would say, take the cash. She later tells him that she would not have objected, but, just imagine had things gone just slightly different.

Well Jerry didn’t have the money for a hotel, and the Indian Casino was not going to provide one for him either. Even though he attempted to persuade them. He feared he would not be able to go. He then decided to get in touch with another local casino and ask them if they would get a hotel for him. That he was not asking for the Rio or anything like that, just a bed to sleep in while he played in the event. In return he said that he would wear their hat if they would do that for him. Lake Elsinore Hotel & Casino and the poker room manager was Pat Wilmes. Pat agreed there on the spot and was about to give him cash right then and there. Jerry was, and is to this day very thankfur for Pat's help. But he probably should have accepted assistance in choosing a hotel, because, as Jerry tells the story he ended up in a motel that was in a run down part of Las Vegas, dirty, and no extra charge for the cock roaches. That he actually feared for his safety as he made his way to the casino daily for the main event.

He said that while playing he really had no expectations on actually winning. He was just happy to have the experience and the opportunity to play with and against those in the poker world that he had come to somewhat be in awe of.

Jerry “The Shadow” Yang, went on to win the living up to his nickname he called an all in with 88 against AQ. The queen flopped and Jerry was behind in the hand but ended up catching a straight on the river to become the 2007 WSOP Champion, and winning 8.25 million dollars.

Of course 8.25 million is a lot of money, but you know the IRS got more than their fair share, and Jerry has gone on to give more than 1 million of those winning to several charities. He has been able to spend more time with his family and they seem to love doing charity work. Before I spoke with Jerry I had had several people tell me what a genuinely nice man he was. Well I can tell you that this is an understatement. He is the real deal. My article for APW is about his charity work and is life as a child in a refugee camp in Laos. This certainly molded him to be the charitable champion that he is. I can’t wait for you to read that article and would recommend you consider purchasing his book when it comes out this fall. “All In, The Jerry Yang Story, From Laos to Las Vegas”
