Ultimate Bet has dropped in its ranking from 31st to 40th, according to Poker Scout on November 8, 2013.

When Ultimate Bet opened its online doors in Nevada on April 30, 2013, I had my doubts for a number of reasons:

1. Interstate (i.e., only within the borders of a given state) poker will never have a sufficient number of players to offer big enough prize pools in tournaments or to have a sufficient number of cash tables open 24-7, especially in small states like Nevada. We will have to wait and see what happens in California.

2. Why would most players play online in Nevada if hundreds of casinos are close-by?

3. Why would tourists visiting Las Vegas to gamble stay in their rooms and play poker on their laptops?

4. The internet poker boom is over.

5. Most players have more knowledge about the game making it much more difficult to make any money, i.e., there are too few fish.

I began tracking Ultimate Bet on Poker Scout on May 26, 2013 when it was ranked 34th with a 7-day average number of players of 181. It has been ranked as high as 31st with a 7-day average number of players of 200. Since September 28, 2013 to today, November 8, 2013, it has been ranked 37th to 40th, reaching its lowest 7-day average number of players of 116 and lowest ranking of 40th today.

Despite the obvious, based on the results recorded at Poker Scout, the poker magazine rags (e.g., CardPlayer and Bluff) continue to tell big fat lies about how successful it is, which supports my contention that they must keep up the hype to keep the fish coming in. The gambling industry relies on puffery and pure exaggerated hype for its existence, and the fact that way too many people are addicted to poker and gambling, which is why most responsible members of Congress are against it.

I am pretty sure that these dismal results at Ultimate Bet are why the bigger corporations that have been granted internet poker licenses in Nevada have not entered the market, and they most likely will not.

“MGM Resorts and Boyd Gaming – have already received their Nevada online poker licenses but have stated that they’re still evaluating the Nevada’s market’s potential.”

Actually, many of the bigger corporations, e.g., Bwin.party, are waiting to see if a Federal online poker bill will be passed:

“BWIN.PARTY FLIP-FLOPS ON NEVADA LICENSE AS NEW FEDERAL ONLINE POKER BILLS LOOM”

“Texas Representative Joe Barton Reintroduces Online Poker Bill To House”

But, the likelihood of a bill ever getting through the House of Representatives is slim since both Speaker of the House John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor have been strong anti-gaming advocates. And, in the Senate, there doesn’t seem to be drive for online gaming/poker regulation.

“In the Senate, there doesn’t seem to be a drive for online gaming/poker regulation. After he floated a bill (never introduced) with now-retired Arizona Senator Jon Kyl in 2012 that would have complemented Barton’s legislation, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada hasn’t pushed forward with any such legislation during the new Congress. In interviews, Reid has stated he “didn’t see” anything happening in the Senate regarding online gaming despite the actions in the House by Reps. Barton and King.

And, the thought that interstate poker will happen in California is doubtful given that the Indian tribes believe it will have a very serious negative impact on their earnings from brick-and-mortar casinos.

“CALIFORNIA TRIBAL ONLINE POKER BILL EXPRESSLY RULES OUT INTERSTATE PLAY”

“A new California online poker bill supported by some of the state’s major Indian tribes has surfaced in draft form. The proposed Internet Poker Consumer Protection Act of 2013 (read it here) is accompanied by a cover letter signed by the chairpersons of eight prominent tribes, including the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, who up to this point had not supported any of the previous online poker initiatives.

The bill is expressly poker-only, including a “strong definition of poker to prevent expansion of games” in order to minimize cannibalization of tribal land-based gaming operations. Eligible licensees would be limited to federally recognized tribes already operating licensed gaming facilities and state card rooms. There would be no limit on the number of licenses beyond the number of eligible licensees, but licensees would have to have owned their land-based gaming facility for five years preceding the bill’s enactment.”

Damn, I hate being right about all this, including that Poker is mainly a game of luck, not skill, because you have no control over the cards you are dealt and more than 70% of hands are folded preflop by professionals!

I used interstate and meant intrastate. Sorry for the error.

Don't worry about being right (if you are right). You're still wrong about many things. grinning smiley
